Hi
While waiting for my car to cool after doing a radiator flush I decided to Google how to test temp and fan on a e90,
Put key in, press start button, once dash lights are on, press the reset odometer button and hold till it brings up the hidden menu display,
The first menu should look like this,
Add the digits up, in my case it adds to 20, then press and hold till it goes to the second menue the ki test, keep pressing till you get to menu 19, it will say lock on,
At the bottom of lock on you will see it says code and 00,
Now keep pressing till u get to the number you added, so I pressed till it said code 20, it will kick you back to the first menu,
Press again and hold till it goes to second menu the ki test and keep pressing till menu 7, wait a second and bang your temp,
Mine orignally was on 65, car was cold, so I started it and kept it on a rev,
As the temp was rising I kept going to see if the fan kicked in, at 96 the fan started spinning,
Hope this helps u guys,

Home / BMW E46 325i Sedan / Wiring Diagrams and Functional Description / Power train /, engine controlMS43 / Engine cooling / Characteristic map cooling / Water pump The housing is made of die cast aluminium or plastic and is screw-mounted on the timing case cover. Good Luck, everyone with high miles should do this as prevention. If you have an older water pump it is a good time to replace this as well. I paid 65.00 for a W/P at Napa Auto. So for around 125.00 you get a new thermostat, W/P and a coolant flush. Cheaper than A BMW coolant flush more than likely.

There are many benefits to owning a BMW. The BMW Company is internationally recognized for the quality of the vehicles they produce. Many owners of the E46 3 Series complain about having coolant leaks. When dealing with coolant leaks it is important to understand what that means for your vehicle’s performance, and why it happened to begin with. Dealing with this issue rather quickly is important to the proper function of your vehicle. If not properly addressed, coolant leaks can result in problems for your car. There are signs you may begin to notice if you are dealing with a coolant leak. If you are unsure, it might be wise to consider visiting a trusted mechanic — preferably one who is familiar with working on BMWs.
Causes of a Coolant Leak
Like most problems, there are usually signs that may indicate you are dealing with an issue. In the case of a coolant leak, one possible cause could be that the reservoir is made from plastic and may begin to wear over time. If it wears too much, it could crack and cause a coolant leak in your vehicle.
The coolant in your car is what helps maintain and control the temperature of your engine. You want to note that you neither want your engine too hot, or too cold. If your car is leaking coolant, your engine may lose its ability to regulate its temperature, putting sensitive engine components in danger.
If you suspect that your coolant reservoir is leaking, you will want to have the entire cooling system inspected. If the reservoir has worn out, there is a strong chance that other components in the cooling system have worn out as well. If other parts have worn out, then you may have additional leaks that you will want to get diagnosed and repaired. As previously mentioned, it is important to make sure your vehicle is not overheating, as this can cause serious damages to your car. These damages can be incredibly costly, but they can be avoided if you are properly maintaining your vehicle.
There are several tests that can be done in order to determine if your car is in fact experiencing a coolant tank leak. The best, and most effective way to determine if you are having a problem with your engine’s cooling system is to test the pressure. A pressure tester is a handy tool to have that can help when dealing with the cooling system in your car. Since there are different ways the coolant could be leaking (internal leak or external leak), it is a good idea to use a pressure tester to determine if there is a leak.
